Historic NSS Call Sign to be Reactivated
|
![]() |
Historic NSS Call Sign to be Reactivated for First Time in More than 40 Years
Operators from the US Naval Academy Radio Club (W3ADO) and the Potomac Valley Radio Club (W3GRF) will reactivate the historic NSS call sign on May 13-14 during the Armed Forces Day Crossband Military/Amateur Radio Communications Test.
Â
Operation from the former NSS Naval Radio Station site on Greenbury Point in Annapolis, Maryland, will get under way at 1300 UTC on Saturday, May 13, and continue until 0200 UTC on Sunday, May 14. NSS will transmit on CW and SSB on 4,038.5, 7,533.5, 14,487, 17,545, and 20,994 kHz and listen for callers on announced Amateur Radio frequencies. All contacting NSS will receive a QSL card.
Â
NSS began operation in 1918 as the Annapolis High Power Radio Station using a Federal Telegraph Company 500 kW arc transmitter and four 600-foot towers, operating in the VLF spectrum. NSS HF operation began about 10 years later, although VLF operation continued into the 1990s. The HF mission was transferred in 1976 to NAM in Norfolk, Virginia. While some of the towers were removed, three lighted, self-supporting towers remain, to serve as local landmarks and as navigation aids to boaters on Chesapeake Bay.

Its this weekend !!!! Come and join us for Andy's Presentation
Whats next in the world of Amateur Radio ~~ well lets talk about a workshop by Andy Stump!! On What =
Here is a summary of PIM and Sweep Techniques ~~~~
The Workshop is for all Amateur Radio Operators, Andy Stump will be doing the presentation , All are welcome to attend ~~
This will be a very informative workshop ~
With the appearance of Site Master (r) units on eBay now relatively inexpensive, I will demonstrate the proper use of a Wiltron Site Master(r), how to use it to find faults and read cable loss. The relationship and differences in Return Loss, PIM (Passive Inter-Modulation), and VSWR will be discussed. PIM causes and affects on communications in repeaters and broadband, PIM prevention, and troubleshooting. There will be a live demonstration of a Wilton Site Master(r), and a KALUS commercial PIM tester. Different connections and how to use them to prevent PIM and minimize return loss will be included in the presentation. Andy has another great idea after this workshop also, don't miss out on this!!! Note Picture Is a example !!

We are ready to start letting everyone know its on the books !!! SKYWARN 2018 , New-Recertification- Keeping Up WIth Changes- ALL are welcome to attend !! This Is A Free Class Presented By The National Weather Service Morristown TN .....
About
Â
The effects of severe weather are felt every year by many Americans. To obtain critical weather information, NOAA’s National Weather Service (NWS), part of the U.S. Department of Commerce, established SKYWARN® with partner organizations. SKYWARN® is a volunteer program with nearly 290,000 trained severe weather spotters. These volunteers help keep their local communities safe by providing timely and accurate reports of severe weather to the National Weather Service.
Â
Although SKYWARN® spotters provide essential information for all types of weather hazards, the main responsibility of a SKYWARN® spotter is to identify and describe severe local storms. In the average year, 10,000 severe thunderstorms, 5,000 floods and more than 1,000 tornadoes occur across the United States. These events threatened lives and property.
Â
Since the program started in the 1970s, the information provided by SKYWARN® spotters, coupled with Doppler radar technology, improved satellite and other data, has enabled NWS to issue more timely and accurate warnings for tornadoes, severe thunderstorms and flash floods.
Â
SKYWARN® storm spotters are part of the ranks of citizens who form the Nation’s first line of defense against severe weather. There can be no finer reward than to know that their efforts have given communities the precious gift of time–seconds and minutes that can help save lives.
Who is Eligible?
Â
NWS encourages anyone with an interest in public service and access to communication, such HAM radio, to join the SKYWARN® program. Volunteers include police and fire personnel, dispatchers, EMS workers, public utility workers and other concerned private citizens. Individuals affiliated with hospitals, schools, churches, nursing homes or who have a responsibility for protecting others are also encouraged to become a spotter.
How Can I Get Involved?
Â
NWS has 122 local Weather Forecast Offices, each with a Warning Coordination Meteorologist, who is responsible for administering the SKYWARN® program in their local area. Training is conducted at these local offices and covers:
Â
Basics of thunderstorm development
Fundamentals of storm structure
Identifying potential severe weather features
Information to report
How to report information
Basic severe weather safety
Â
Classes are free and typically are about two hours long. To find out when a SKYWARN® class will be conducted in local your area, contact your local Warning Coordination Meteorologist at: http://www.stormready.noaa.gov/contact.htm
Â
SKYWARN is a concept developed in the late 1960s that was intended to promote a cooperative effort between the National Weather Service and communities. The emphasis of the effort is often focused on the storm spotter, an individual who takes a position near their community and reports wind gusts, hail size, rainfall, and cloud formations that could signal a developing tornado. Another part of SKYWARN is the receipt and effective distribution of National Weather Service information.
Â
The organization of spotters and the distribution of warning information may lies with the National Weather Service or with an emergency management agency within the community. This agency could be a police or fire department, or often is an emergency management/service group (what people might still think of as civil defense groups). This varies across the country however, with local national weather service offices taking the lead in some locations, while emergency management takes the lead in other areas.
Â
SKYWARN is not a club or organization, however, in some areas where Emergency Management programs do not perform the function, people have organized SKYWARN groups that work independent of a parent government agency and feed valuable information to the National Weather Service. While this provides the radar meteorologist with much needed input, the circuit is not complete if the information does not reach those who can activate sirens or local broadcast systems.
Â
SKYWARN spotters are not by definition “Storm Chasers”. While their functions and methods are similar, the spotter stays close to home and usually has ties to a local agency. Storm chasers often cover hundreds of miles a day. The term Storm Chaser covers a wide variety of people. Some are meteorologists doing specific research or are gathering basic information (like video) for training and comparison to radar data. Others chase storms to provide live information for the media, and others simply do it for the thrill.
Â
Storm Spotting and Storm Chasing is dangerous and should not be done without proper training, experience and equipment.
Â
The National Weather Service conducts spotter training classes across the United States, and your local National Weather Service office should be consulted as to when the next class will be held.

About The 470 Repeater
|
![]() |
The 145.470 (-) (optional CTCSS tone: 118.8 Hz) repeater is located NORTH
of the Knoxville area - high atop Cross Mountain!
Â
Â
Current Status: ON THE AIR!!
Â
PLEASE NOTE: THE 145.470 REPEATER MAY OR MAY NOT HAVE A 118.8 CTCSS DECODE TONE ACTIVE. IF YOU ARE UNABLE TO ACCESS THE REPEATER, PLEASE VERIFY THAT YOU ARE TRANSMITTING A 118.8 Hz CTCSS TONE. IF THE REPEATER HAS THE TONE DECODE ACTIVE, IT WILL BE RETURNED TO CARRIER SQUELCH AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. 73 de Tim WB4GBI
Â
When this repeater was first put into service at this location, it was hoped that it would cover an area just to the north of Knoxville to up near the state line... however... that was not to be the case. As it turns out, we were pleasantly surprised that this machine has far exceeded those boundaries!
Â
In reality... this repeater covers a wide and rugged area of the Southeastern United States! Many regular users of this machine do so routinely from Tennessee, North Carolina and Kentucky!
Â
Although many East Tennessee hams use this machine every day, we have been known to make contacts in Virginia... Georgia ....Kentucky,....North Carolina, and even parts of Ohio!

IRLP in Knoxville TN

OPERATIONAL STATUS: ON THE AIR!
The WB4GBI 145.17 repeater now features an IRLP node!
From Tim, WB4GBI:
Â
Thanks to Joe, K1RBY, the 145.17 WB4GBI repeater has an IRLP node! When you use the IRLP node on 145.17, it will sound just like another repeater user... only this user will bring us fellow amateur radio operators from around the world!
Â
Â
For more specific user information about IRLP, please check out their website. To use IRLP, you will need the four digit "node" or "reflector" number. That information is available on the website as well, click HERE. The WB4GBI 145.170 IRLP node is 8342. After you have the four-digit number for the node or reflector that you wish to connect to, key your radio, ID with your callsign, then use your DTMF (touch tone) pad to send the number. If you are successful, you will hear the repeater respond with the node or reflector's connect message. Remember to PAUSE between transmissions to give the IRLP system time to work. When you are finished, key up your mic, ID first, then send the DTMF tones "73." The system will respond with a disconnect message if successful.
Â
In order for my repeater to work properly on IRLP, I have had to make some changes to the repeater itself. I am changing the repeater to use tone squelch (PL) on a full time basis. The tone is 118.8 Hertz, similiar to my other repeaters. The addition of the tone does NOT mean that the repeater is closed! It is in place to insure that no unwanted audio or signals are passed into the IRLP system.
Â
If you have any questions about how to use IRLP on 145.17, please give me a call or email
The 145.170 (PL 118.8 Hz) repeater is located in
South Knox County, TN.
This is really a great system

World Friendship Net 9251

The *WORLD* Friendship Net meets Monday through Friday at 8pm Eastern, 5pm Pacific time on the *WORLD* Conference server and IRLP node 9251. The motto on our website is “Spreading friendship and goodwill across the globe through Amateur Radio and the Internet. There is a different NCS every night.
The WFN is a continuation of what was the Amateurs4Echolink Phone net, started by Dave KI4POO. When he discontinued the net due to family responsibilities, the rest of us decided to continue the net under a different name. Since we were on the *WORLD* server and it is a friendship net, we called it the *WORLD* Friendship net. We kept most of the same net controllers, set up a new web site and Facebook page, and have had good success thus far. We have a certificate program for 10 check-ins, and the site has a guestbook and chat.
By the way, feel free to put a link to the chat on your site and use it for your net. It was set up by the folks at the *DODROPIN* server. They connect to us on Wednesday and Friday, and we join their net on Saturday. The chat page is at world.dodropin.org. It is much better than the Echolink text box and you can share online pics and URLS there as well.
The site doesn’t have much in the way of photos yet but I think I will be adding some soon.
God bless & 73 de Mike W1MWB
Western Reflector 9250 IRLP
|
![]() |
The Western Reflector is a IRLP Reflector with ten channels ( 9250 through 9259). It is located in a co-location facility in Las Vegas with very high bandwidth, much more than a T-1. It provides for multi node connections on each channel as opposed to a single node-to-node connection. All nodes connecting to a reflector channel will hear all other nodes on the same reflector channel. The reflector allows for the linking of numerous node together for nets, multi node QSOs, and other special uses. The reflector is on line and available 24 hours a day, seven days per week.
